Concept Explanation

Testis In Males

They are oval bodies two in number, present outside the abdomen cavity in skin pouches called as scrotum. Scrotum helps to control the temperature of the testis. The two primary functions of testis are :

  • Production of testosterone(male hormone) :  The testes also synthesize the male sex hormone testosterone. Testosterone secretion begins at the onset of puberty (age of sexual maturity), at 10—12 years of age. It helps in the development of secondary sexual characters in males, e.g., moustache, beard, etc.  It also regulates sex drive, bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and the production of red blood cells and sperm.
  • Producing sperms which carries the male genetic information : Sperm is a male reproductive cell, or gamete. It contains all the genetic material of the male that is transferred to the female vagina by the process of fertilization. The production of sperm is called as spermatogenesis.
